About Hereford

RNC is based in the City of Hereford, a busy market town in the heart of the Wye valley.
Hereford’s unique city centre is home to all of the big brand retailers as well as unique independent stores, so everything is within reach of the College. The hospital is less than a mile away, as are the train and bus stations. Within minutes of leaving the city centre, you can find yourself surrounded by Herefordshire’s idyllic countryside where there is so much on offer; whether it’s kayaking on the river Wye or walking, enjoying the wildlife or camping, there really is something for everyone.
Hereford is steeped in history; from the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library which are housed in the 11th century cathedral, to the visits of Edward Elgar, the famous composer. The city is famous for its food and drink; Herefordshire beef, Wye salmon and local cider and real ales are renowned throughout the country, resulting in fantastic food and drink in the many restaurants and pubs situated in the county.
The city has a vibrant cultural scene; museums, art galleries, jewellers and craft shops attract many visitors, as do the music venues in the evenings, where you can find music for all tastes. A lively nightlife regularly attracts the big names in the music industry; Judge Jules, Pendulum and Shaun Ryder have recently performed in the city’s clubs. For theatre lovers, the Courtyard is the County’s centre for the arts, staging plays, comedy evenings and films, as well as exhibitions and fairs.
Sport is also high on the agenda in Hereford, with Hereford United situated just down the road from RNC, as well as Rugby, Hockey, Golf, Swimming and Cricket to name but a few on the sporting radar. The facilities in Hereford are second to none; RNC itself is home to the Great Britain/England Blind Football Team, who competed in Beijing in 2008, and in 2010 we host the World Blind Football Championships. Not only does RNC have state of the art sports facilities, there are also ten Halo affiliated Leisure Centres in and around the county.
Hereford has been home to RNC for the last 30 years, so local people, businesses and shops are well used to meeting people with a visual impairment. Many taxi drivers, shop assistants and leisure staff have had visual impairment awareness training so will be aware of how they can support you should you require assistance.
