Richard ran against the odds for RNC

After 5 years of trying to gain a place to run the world famous London Marathon, Hereford man Richard Davies succeeded, and decided to make it a fundraiser for RNC.

Although a serious knee injury and surgery cast doubts on his ability to take part, Richard completed this, his first marathon, in under 4 hours and was delighted to support the College. He said, "As a young boy I lost my sight temporarily after an accident. I know how lucky I was to get my sight back, and I'm pleased be able to offer support to the students at RNC who get on with life without their sight."

RNC's own Helen Bliss is now preparing to run September's Run to the Beat Half Marathon in aid of RNC. You can sponsor Helen by visiting her justgiving fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/helenbliss or if you’re feeling up to the challenge why not run a race for RNC too? Email us at  info@rncfundraising.org.uk for more information.

Black Mountain Challenge with a twist

Last May 15 Hereford TA soldiers, including RNC staff members Phil Mayne and Colin Spurling, embarked on an heroic challenge for us.

No strangers to the famous Black Mountain Challenge, this time the team made the 30 mile run even more demanding by incorporating it into a two day triathlon! After swimming 1.5 miles at Hereford Pool and cycling 27 miles to Longtown on the Welsh Borders, the team camped overnight before embarking on the gruelling run up and over the mountains at 6am the next day.

Thanks to these incredible efforts a staggering £6,000 was raised. Sponsors included almost 400 of postman Bob Morris’ delivery round customers, who were only too happy to join him in supporting RNC.  Bob said, “I like getting involved in the local community, especially helping people less fortunate than myself. The College is a great cause.”

Join the Friends of RNC

The Friends of RNC are a jolly bunch of fundraising volunteers who help us run events or organise their own in aid of the College.

Anita Rouse, a Friend for over 10 years, recently raised £500 by hosting ‘An Evening of Inspiration’. She invited Tony Larkin, who is head coach of the GB blind football team and a senior RNC staff member, to give a talk about blind football and the team’s Beijing Paralympics adventure.

Perhaps you know someone with an interesting story to tell. Why not ask them to give a talk, lay on some nice food and wine and raise money for RNC through ticket sales?

Rod Mason Jazz Concert - Monday 15 & Tuesday 16 March 2010

They're back! Rod Mason and his Hot Five return to RNC this March for two special concerts in aid of our Building Brighter Futures Appeal.

Silver anniversary celebration!

This year Rod and the band are celebrating 25 years together, and Rod is marking his 50th year of professional playing.

The band have been hugely successful since staring up in Germany in 1985, and have been touring Europe and further afield ever since, making regular TV and radio appearances along the way.

The Hot Five's broad repertoire is firmly rooted in classic jazz, featuring Mason's original arrangements from Louis Armstrong's Hot Five and Seven, King Oliver's Creole Band and Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers, plus a wide selection of material from other (sometimes unexpected) sources.

As part of only a handful of concerts during a brief UK tour this Spring, Rod and the Hot Five are bringing their outstanding blend of first-class jazz, exciting musicianship and good humoured entertainment to RNC - get your ticket while you can!

Doors open at 7pm on both Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 March.

Tickets £15. Available from RNC Fundraising on 01432 376372 or from the RNC Charity Shop at 26 Commercial Street, Hereford, or The Outback, Church Street, Hereford.

Wear Bright for Sight!

Support our Building Brighter Futures Appeal by encouraging everyone in your school or office to dig out their most garish garb and Wear Bright for Sight!

RNC's Bright for Sight Day marks World Sight Day, when we aim to raise awareness of sight loss conditions and raise funds for our continuing campus development, which is improving opportunities for the many people who come to RNC each year to gain the academic or vocational qualifications they need for university or work, and get the very best support as they prepare for independent living.

If you can't wait until the next Bright for Sight Day, which is on Thursday October 14 2010, then don't!

Schools, businesses and community groups around the county have been organising their own Bright for Sight Days to help raise funds. All you have to do is choose a date and get in touch - we can provide you with posters and support to help spread the word, and give you lots of ideas for making your day a day of fun as well as fundraising!
