IT'S OFFICIAL: EQUAL TRADING IS THE BUSINESS!
The Royal National College for the Blind's Young Enterprise company Equal Trading has won this year's Hereford Area Young Enterprise competition 2010.
Business studies students Ryan Compton, Jack Blackmore, Roseanne Fish and Lysette Chaproniere beat off strong competition to take three awards at this year’s Herefordshire Young Enterprise Finals - for Best Company Report, Best Managing Director (Ryan Compton) and Best Overall Company at the annual presentation evening and award ceremony, held at thePoint4 on Thursday 22 April.
The team delivered a lively and confident presentation complete with a hiphop-style introduction and a comprehensive analysis of the lessons learned through setting up and running their Young Enterprise company this year.
In summing up their decision to award Equal Trading top prize, the judges said they were impressed that the company had not only made a profit, they had taken the initiative of paying themselves a small wage to keep motivated, they had won the Best Customer Service Award at a Hereford Trade Fair. They had also communicated well with their shareholders and demonstrated excellent teamwork by working to the strengths of each member, identifying solutions to problems and running a smooth operation.
Since forming at the beginning of the year Equal Trading have sold Braille transcription services to Herefordshire Council's recycling division and have generated further funds by selling a range of pashminas and England football merchandise through trade stands and the College’s charity shop in Commercial Street, Hereford, to capitalise on the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa, and the World Blind Football Championship, which will be held at the College this August.
Speaking of the team's win and his own award for Best Managing Director, Ryan Compton said, "This is brilliant. I'm amazed that we got through to the next stage, this has been a great night and I've gained so much from doing Young Enterprise. It's also been great to meet the other teams that took part."
Roseanne Fish, Equal Trading's Marketing Director said, "We're overwhelmed! The next event will have a much bigger audience so we are going to do some more practising."
The team's business advisor is successful local businesswoman Kirsty Sockett, who said, "I'm absolutely delighted. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Equal Trading and their success is well deserved."
Equal Trading represents the only specialist college amongst the 9 competing schools and colleges in Herefordshire. This win demonstrates that with appropriate support, students with disabilities can compete on an equal playing field, in this case with their sighted peers.
