Specialist ICT and Assistive Technology - Training and Consultancy

With more and more people with a visual impairment progressing into Further and Higher Education and the workplace, the chances are you currently have or may have in the near future, a blind or partially sighted student at your institution or colleague in your organisation.

The number of recent enquiries seeking advice on specialist ICT equipment and software for people with sight loss suggests a need for training. Who better to assist, than The Royal National College for the Blind? A Beacon College with over 130 years of expertise in delivering programmes to blind and partially sighted students, we are the UK's leading college for the education and training of people who are visually impaired.
 
WHAT? RNC is offering a one-day course to help you support your learners and clients with sight loss who use specialist ICT such as screen readers and magnification software
 
The session will introduce you to:
  • A brief overview of Assistive Technology
  • Supernova - magnification and screen reader software. The implications for staff supporting learners and clients and will enable you to have hands-on practical experience
  • JAWS - is a more complex screen reader. These two popular assistive technologies allow disabled users - which include those with visual, hearing impairment as well as those with cognitive difficulties, access to computers.
  • Hands-on tasks - this will give participants a chance to compare the 2 technologies and understand some of the complexities of using a screen reader without screen or mouse access.
  • Guidelines for producing accessible materials for online learning - do's and don'ts.
 
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? ICT trainers, support, teaching staff and personal tutors etc. The training is for those with no or limited experience of enabling technology.
