Moving into Employment
Employment - a target for all at RNC
Coming to RNC is all about preparing you for employment - either directly or via university, work placement or voluntary work.
Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Team - helping you plan for the future
RNC’s enthusiastic IAG Team is committed to providing support to students in identifying and achieving your career and employment goals. Covering everything from preparation for Higher Education to job searching, making applications and preparing for job interviews, the team will ensure that you have all the support and information you need to make realistic decisions, formulate plans and most importantly, put them into action. They will equip you with all the skills you’ll need in the transition from RNC into the world of work or Further/Higher Education.
This advice and support could include:
• Employment counselling and advice
• Job search skills
• Research into and preparation for Further or Higher Education
• Visits to colleges and universities and making UCAS applications
• Small business planning
• Support for self-employment
• Work placement and experience
• Benefits information
• Support with the transition out of RNC.
IAG programmes are delivered on an individual basis, according to your specific goals and ambitions. Group work, one-to-one training and visits from outside speakers and trainers are also commonplace.
Work Placement and Experience Opportunities
The best way to prepare for the ‘world of work’ is through work experience and placements where you can apply and develop skills in practical, real life situations. RNC’s dedicated Work Placement Officer will assist students in securing a suitable position, either within RNC, a local organisation or in your home area.
Students may have internal and/or external work placements, where you will develop additional work-focused skills. Internal placements will be undertaken in one of RNC’s busy teams such as Marketing, Sales, Fundraising, General Office or our Access Centre. External placements are, ideally, within a business or organisation in your home area.
After RNC
On completion of your programme we will help you to liaise with support agencies such as Action for Blind People, Remploy, local Associations for the Blind, Job Brokers, Disability Employment Advisers and Social Services in your home town to ensure you continue to get support in job searching, job retention and independent living.
TEPs – a unique employment experience
Adult students at RNC can apply for the Transitional Employment Posts (TEP) programme. This unique initiative offers individuals the opportunity to gain real, paid work experience and enhance their CV.
RNC currently offers a range of TEP opportunities on six-month fixed-term contracts in various functions across the College including Business Development, Student Services, IAG, General Office, Marketing and Customer Services.
Example: On successful completion of his programme, Dave Rawlings developed skills in PR, communication and social media through his TEP position in RNC’s Marketing Department.
Example: Nadeem Mughal developed skills highly valued by employers, in particular communication skills, ICT and research techniques during his time as a TEP in RNC’s Sales and Fundraising Teams.
